Maldives has been a favorite holiday destination for Indians. From Indian film stars to businessmen and working people have also been visiting Maldives. Indians like the beaches of Maldives very much. After reaching Lakshadweep, Narendra Modi has in a way asked the people that why Maldives and not Lakshadweep, where you can enjoy the same beauty in less time and expense. The magnificent beaches of Lakshadweep point towards huge tourist potential. Lakshadweep also rivals Maldives in terms of natural beauty and peace. The PM also inaugurated and laid the foundation stone of various projects worth Rs 1,150 crore. Even though these islands are too small to serve any strategic purpose, tourism can be a game changer with strategic consequences.

Maldives is slowly leaning towards China

Maldives is a country with which India has good relations. Irrespective of government affiliation, a large number of Indians have been visiting Maldives, but their attitude has changed after Mohammed Muizzu won the presidential election in Maldives in October 2023.Maldives terminated the hydrographic survey agreement it had with India in December last year. Muizzu has also decided to send back Indian soldiers. Which has spoiled the relations between the two countries.
On one hand, Muizzu is showing indifference towards India and on the other hand, his government is increasing its proximity to China. Maldives is also important for India, hence its proximity to China has increased concerns about India's national security. India has tried to convince Maldives through many channels. PM Modi's visit to Lakshadweep is also being seen as an attempt to put pressure on the tourism industry of Maldives by hurting it.
